A constant reminder

I know someone currently struggling with addiction.

While desperate to be sober, my friend has been reluctant to go to ‘anonymous’ meetings. As an life-long athiest, they don’t agree with steps that involve turning their ‘life and will over to the care of God’.

This was a disappointment to my friend’s therapist; a strong believer in the 12 step program. In the middle of a long discussion about it, the therapist said….. ‘you are missing the point, you are free to choose your Higher Power. It doesn’t have to be a specific religious deity. Your Higher Power could be your partner, your mother, or your dog.

My friend liked that idea, and thought ‘OK. I can cope with that. My dog is now my Higher Power.’

When I heard about this, I said “good idea …… every time you bend down to pickup your Higher Power’s poop, you will be reminded of your relative position in the relationship’
